Preview to 'Rise to Rebellion' By Jeff Shaara

Rise to Rebellion (A Novel on the American Revolution)

Intro to the book + the Author

Jeff Shaara was 12 years old; he took a short walk with his father in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, that would begin a lifetime journey into history.

While the pair walked in the battlefield grounds, Shaara’s father, Michael Shaara, narrated the events that took place there 200 years prior. Toward the end of their walk, Shaara looked up at his father, who was weeping at the historic events that happened where they stood.

Inspired in part by that day in Getysburg, Micheal Shaara, his father went on to write The Killer Angels, the Civil War novel. Jeff Shaara followed his fathers footsteps, telling the story of the nation's history through novels about the American Revolution, such as The Glorious Cause and Rise to Rebellion.

Rise to Rebellion, New York Times bestselling book: 2001 historical fiction book by Jeff Shaara that tells the story of the events leading up to the American Revolution. The acclaimed author who illuminated the Civil War and the Mexican-American War brilliantly brings to life the American Revolution, creating a superb saga of the men who helped to forge the destiny of a nation.

The book spans from the Boston Massacre to the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The events of the American Revolution are portrayed through the perspectives of multiple characters, including Sentry Hugh White of the British armyJohn AdamsBenjamin Franklin, General Thomas GageGeorge Washington, Governor Thomas Hutchinson, Captain James Hall, etc.

In 1770, the fuse of revolution is lit by a fateful command—“Fire!”—as England’s peacekeeping mission ignites into the Boston Massacre. The senseless killing of civilians leads to a uncontrolled trial in which lawyer John Adams must defend the very enemy who has assaulted and abused the laws he holds sacred.

More than a powerful portrait of the people and purpose of the revolution, Rise to Rebellion, with only 512 pages, in which he has portrayed the whole war, is a vivid account of history's most pivotal events. The Boston Tea Party, the battles of Concord and Bunker Hill--all are recreated with the kind of breath-taking detail only a master like Jeff Shaara can muster.
