My Music Journey

Carnatic Music is the South Indian Classical music and Hindustani Music is the North Indian classical music. Both of them have originated from the Samaveda. In the Olden times, there was only one system of Indian Classical music, which means, that both of these forms were not distinct! However, it was only in the 11th/12th century CE that the differentiation of Hindustani and Carnatic music took place!

Now you will think: How and why?

Well, there are many theories, but the main reason behind this division was when the Islam’s invaded in India! Most of the North of India came under the rule of the Muslims! Whereas, the south of India was safe away from this ruler!

Therefore, the Music of north India, was influenced by the Persian + Arabic techniques, and eventually this gave rise to Hindustani Music! The name ‘HINDUSTANI’ because the Muslim invaders called this country as Hindustan!

However, on the other hand, the South of India’s music was developed on the traditional lines, and due to flourishing of this music in the Carnatic belt of South India, the rise of Carnatic Music took place!

I learn Hindustani music at my school on the piano, with all the ragas! Niyati has also started learning the same a year ago online, and now I think she has flying fingers, because she can do the ragas and thaats so effortlessly! Therefore, you should always follow the old saying, ‘Practice makes Perfect!’

During the lockdown, I decided I wanted to try out Carnatic Music, as I was inspired by everyone at Yoganjali Natyalam!! Also I wanted to learn and experience a new music style! My true heartfelt singing journey started at YOGNAT from Devasena Miss and Dhivya Priya aka; a beautiful mother daughter duo!

I have been realizing quite a few differences between these 2 music styles, such as-

  • ·        The Hindustani Classical Music compositions usually use North Indian languages, such as Rajasthani, Bhojpuri, Urdu, etc, whereas Carnatic music usually have compositions using south Indian languages, such as Tamil, Telugu, Malyalam, etc.
  • ·       In Carnatic Music, the vast variety of emotions are based on a devotional/divine context, whereas in Hindustani compositions is based more on the Human nature/emotions/interactions!
  •       They both use a different variety of instruments, such as Hindustani music mostly uses Sarangi, Tabla, Sitar, whereas Carnatic music uses the Mridangam, Veena, Sitar and Mandolin!

Till now, I have learnt Bhajans, Lessons and Prayers!

Its a bliss listening and learning Music from the best of teachers, such as Devasena Miss and Dhivya Priya akka! I have actually seen a real difference in me!
